SCV Chinese Dance Performs at Valencia High School
Honoring AAPI Heritage Through Dance: SCV Chinese Dance Performs at Valencia High School
On May 19, SCV Chinese Dance was honored to perform at Valencia High School’s AAPI Appreciation Event. This event was hosted by ASB Director Joshua Benham and organized by the VHS ASB. During this event, SCV Chinese Dance performed at Valencia High School. The performance took place outdoors during the school’s brunch break. Hundreds of students and staff gathered to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month through culture, art, and community.

A Celebration of Movement and Music
Our group presented a full 16-minute program—one of our largest school performances to date—featuring both adult and youth dancers. The show opened with a round fan solo, followed by the dramatic White Snake duet and an umbrella dance.

The children’s segment featured a bright and cheerful yellow fan dance, an ancient-style scroll dance, and a Ne Zha 2–themed performance. Our adults group followed up with a vintage feather fan dance set to “Ye Shanghai,” and a joyful Chinese rendition of the classic British song “Lemon Tree.” Indeed, the vibrant dances performed by SCV Chinese Dance caught the attention of the audience.

The performance concluded with two signature pieces: a long silk fan duet and the traditional long red ribbon dance. These pieces filled the courtyard with vibrant color and motion. Despite the wind adding an extra layer of challenge, it also gave life to the flowing silks and ribbons. This made the performance even more dynamic and visually stunning.

Building Connection Through Culture
Performing for the entire student body was a memorable and inspiring experience. The energy from the crowd, the curiosity of students, and the enthusiasm of staff made this event a true highlight of our year. Experiences like this remind us how art and movement can connect people across cultures and generations. This was evident when SCV Chinese Dance performed at Valencia High School.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Joshua Benham, the VHS ASB, and the Valencia High School staff for organizing such a thoughtful and inclusive program. It celebrated AAPI Heritage Month.
Looking Ahead
SCV Chinese Dance is dedicated to sharing the beauty of Chinese culture through traditional and contemporary performance. We look forward to future opportunities to bring Chinese dance to schools, festivals, and community events across Santa Clarita and beyond. We aim to do so just as we did at Valencia High School.
